The Urban Jungle

To improve urban forest planning, management and policies at the local to national scale, information is needed on the extent of the urban forest resource, how it varies across the nation and how it is changing.

A combination of satellite analysis and national urban map data with local field data collection will help reveal the magnitude and composition of this important resource, how urbanization is expanding, and factors that will lead to changes in tree species health and distribution in the future.

Skylight Forestry provides urban forest management support services to public and private agencies nation-wide. Specifically in:

Tree Inventories and Assessment

Tree Inventories and Assessment

Tree inventories and on- the-ground assessments are critical for determining tree species diversity, tree size, and tree condition.

Urban Tree Canopy (UTC) Assessment

Urban Tree Canopy (UTC) Assessment

A UTC assessment provides strategic information for setting overall goals and priorities associated with a locality’s tree canopy growth and management.

Land Cover Mapping

Land Cover Mapping

The assessment merges information about the location of trees with land cover and land ownership information to provide a picture of the existing tree canopy, usually in the form of a map with canopy quantified as percent cover.
